When
breaking in a new engine you need break-in oil that will seat the piston rings
quickly while providing proper wear protection to vital parts like you cam lobes.
To achieve this AMSOIL has formulated their break in oil without friction modifiers
in SAE 30W oil.
During the break in process, you need break-in oil that will provide the correct level of wear control so you are leveling out the peaks in the cylinder left by the bore and honing process (see fig1) This gives the rings a increased surface area increasing compression and thus performance. AMSOIL Break-In Oil contains high levels of zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP) additives designed to provide the anti-wear protection required during this critical period.
Insufficient wear during the break-in process will leave the rings not properly seated reducing compression and performance not to mention increased oil consumption (see fig 2).
